307 sbc bore and stroke

A 307 Chevy engine is kind of an oddball combo. It has a 3.875 bore (same as a 283) and a 3.25 stroke (same as a 327). So, there are 2 ways to regard a 307. Either as a stroked 283, or, as a 327 with a smaller bore. Of course, everyone's circumstances are different, BUT, all things being equal, SPEND THE MONEY ON A 350..

If you want a 23 degree setup I'd say a 215-230cc head is easy to get and fairly cheap. Big bore and short stroke is always fun but you have to keep in mind that the stroke isn't the limiting factor on rpm. It is usually the valvetrain. I like 4.155 x 3.335 with a 227/230 head and a shaft rocker system.Yes, .030 is the preferred max, but if it has already been bored .030, and a .040 bore will clean it up, you will usually be OK on most SB400s. Just for the very reasons above, my preference is to bore a SB400 only .020 if that will clean it up. That extra .010 will never make a noticeable difference on a street engine.

Basically using the 283's bore/storke and stroke/rod ratio but in a big block. The 302 is easier to use as an examble. 4" bore: 3" stroke.
