I just left a voice mail on my wife's identical phone (purchased at the same time/place) and her phone also does NOT show the red dot with new voice mail. The it does buzz when one is left, shows a missed call dot, and the notification bar shows a new e-mail, but NO red dot on the green voice mail icon. Unfortunately, it looks like you had the same experience as one of the other commenters in the Verizon forum because Samsung doesn't offer the same visual voicemail option like Google Pixel phones that have native Android settings.
