We are not sure what the S indicates as S codes were not used for the MFG month. The Remington Model 552 Speedmaster is a blow-back operated, self-loading, semi-automatic rifle that can fire .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 long rifle cartridges. Ammunition is fed from a tubular magazine under the barrel. V2-K3. Barrel Length: 23. Bore condition: Good. On my 552, it has the letters "P Z" for Jun 1975. The lower leg on the P is somewhat short, but there's enough there that I can tell it IS a "P". (It also has the plain wood and 23 1/2" barrel) I would disregard the numbers ("78"). They are essentially assembly and/or inspectors' marks. I still have Dad's old 550-1 that he bought the year I was born (1957) - mail order! I recently got an old and crusty 552 that I am still cleaning up.
